I am a wife, a mother, and a farmer. Along with tending my garden, milking goats, and chasing chickens I also enjoy knitting and spending quiet time with my family. One thing I have learned about myself recently is that I am extremely competitive. Not necessarily with others but with myself. I push to out do myself on every project I start.

I make a living and have a whole lot of fun doing it!

I love what I do and I love supporting my family by making people happy. I believe graphic design is design with a purpose. Most often it's purpose is to make money. Just about every business owner wants great design at little to no cost, trust me I've been there, but sometimes you have to spend money to make money.

This is definitely not to say that I believe in gouging my clients on price. Many in the graphic design industry rely heavily on customer loyalty and repeat business in order to thrive, and nothing puts people off more than being unfairly treated on price. So as much as I'd love to make a ton of money (who wouldn't?) I know that charging a fair amount for the hard work I do is going to generate repeat business. I promise to always be fair with you on price.

Brioso Design?

For weeks I agonized over the perfect name for my design business. So much so, it was starting to interrupt my sleep patterns. I played around with versions of my name and brand marketing terms (all of which were overused and worn out).
I wanted a name that was unique to me and a name that meant something. My husband and I spent countless nights throwing names around to no avail when in exasperation I looked down at my cat and said jokingly, "I should just name my design company after Brioso (Brio for short) because he insists on laying next to my mouse pad every moment I'm at my desk. My husband quickly replied, "That's it!" A quick google search later, Brio made a name for himself.

The Italian musical term brioso is an indication to play with vigor and spirit; to make a composition full of life; lit. “lively.” It was exactly what I was looking for! For someone who loves life it only makes sense my designs reflect my enthusiasm for life and living it to the fullest. Brio, on the other hand isn't living up to his name so much. He is determined to spend most of his days sleeping, eating and sleeping some more. Lazy bum!

Where I have been, Who I am, and What I plan to keep doing:

I absolutely love graphic design. Actually, I love all arts and crafts in general. In fact, when I graduated high school (too many years ago to admit) I decided on Fine Art and History as my majors. Shortly thereafter everyone started telling me, "You'll never make any money as an artist!" Realizing they may be on to something (and I’m really not cut out to be the starving artist type) I set my sights on other ventures. I spent some time in the Aviation world getting my pilot's license and attending Spokane Community College's Aviation Maintenance Program. I learned a great deal about my perseverance and ability to step out of my comfort zone.

In 2007 I was blessed to marry my loving husband and was presented with the opportunity to co-own a start-up organic coffee roasting company named Avion Coffee. Being a small company with a super tight budget I forced myself to learn graphic design programs in an effort to develop my own marketing materials and website. It was not without its ups and downs for sure. Looking back I would have hired a professional! After cementing our brand image and packaging, I was thankful for the experience and became convinced that graphic and web design was what I wanted to do when I grew up. (I can't think of a better way to learn who you are and what you’re made of than through business ownership – not for the faint of heart).

My family and friends are my biggest supporters and help me develop my growing business by spreading word of my services. In an effort to hone my abilities and polish my skills I continue my education through North Idaho College's Graphic Design Program. I believe that everyone, no matter the industry, needs to constantly be up to date on the latest trends and developments. Even pro football players still have training sessions and coaches! I finally feel like I've found my calling. I may have started out loving Fine Art, but I've found my home in Graphic Design. I wouldn't trade the journey to get here for any shortcut.
